“Electron emission of quantum systems in complete and time-resolved fashion”

“Electron emission of quantum systems in complete and time-resolved fashion”

The fundamental interaction of light with matter leading to the emission of electrons, called the photoelectric effect and explained by Einstein, marks the foundation of quantum mechanics. In this presentation I will give an overview on the development of this field and introduce a method on how to probe, in a complete fashion, photoionization events which lead to the formation of several charged particles. In building on that, for about a centuryphoton-induced electron emissionhad been tacitly regarded as an instantaneous phenomenon, up until the recent introduction of attosecond (1 as = 10-18 s) time-resolved spectroscopy methods. In the second part of my presentation, I will introducea brand-new high power laser facility called Attohallen which we established during the pandemic at the University of Gothenburg, with focus on its unique capabilities in hope of stimulating and attracting many mutual and fruitful collaborative efforts on experiment and theory.
