The largest existing tokamak JET with metallic fist wall and 3m radius performed successful DT fusion plasmas with almost 60MJ fusion energy. JET gives final scientific input to the operation strategy of the next step device ITER. ITER, a magnetically confined plasma torus with 6.2m radius, will start operation in a few years and aims in a power amplification of at least a factor 10 with steady-state-like power output and demonstration of tritium breeding in lithium blankets. The development and scientific and engineering challenges for ITER and demonstration reactors like DEMO or ARC will be assessed. The perspectives of nuclear fusion as one ingredient to the electricity generation in the next decades will be briefly presented focusing on a realistic view on the promising -CO2-free- energy source for the middle of this century.
