" Fostering intuitions on uncertainty, information content and entropy in the classroom through playful activities "

To what extent are intuitions about the mathematical concept of entropy available to students at level 4 and 5? Can intuitions on mathematical information and on entropy be fostered by means of brief interventions based on appropriate formats, i.e. games and working sheets?

The talk describes successful school interventions:

The first one made systematic use of the game „Who is it“and variations thereof. Here the sensitivity of children, with regard to properties of cues provided by the specific environment, was tested in different settings. These activities fostered intuitions on information content, coding and decoding which could be assessed reliably.

The second study was devoted to en-active versions of the „Mastermind“ game. The activities with different jars containing cubes in different colours, whose compositions had to be determined, helped strengthen children's understanding of proportions and their intuitions for entropy.
