"Instabilities and Surprises in the Physics of Frictional Granular Matter"

Frictional granular matter is all around us, from sand dunes to apples on the market stand. Yet the fundamental physics of this state of matter is far from being resolved. In this lecture I will discuss recently found novel instabilities and other surprises, including thorny issues of the existence (or inexistence) of elasticity theory in such materials, even at full mechanical equilibrium. The lecture will not assume prior knowledge of the subject.
